Memory upgrade MacBook Pro

Will it be beneficial to upgrade from 8 to 16 GB of RAM on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro 9,1, with 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7. Could it be detrimental?

Maybe. An increase in RAM is only helpful if your workload is using the RAM that is installed and need more to do it job.

I suggest you use the program created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  It will provide a snapshot of your system which we can analyze to possibly determine the cause of your problem. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Etrecheck – System Information

It won't be detrimental but whether it will be beneficial depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

Thanks. I do various tasks on my computer, and frankly don't know if the extra RAM would be needed. I have run out of space on my hard drive  and am going to upgrade from 500GB SSD to 2TB SSD, and was considering upgrading the RAM as well at the same time.

Knowing upgrading the RAM is not harmful is of help.

With this mid 2012 model, and its 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, is it able to use the extra RAM, when and if I ever do tasks that need to use it? or will it not be able to use the extra memory and would upgrading be a waste of money?

If you post an EtreCheck report, after analysis we can tell you if additional RAM is needed.

Sure, it will use all the memory as needed, but take Allan's suggestion and run Etrecheck. That way we will know exactly what apps you are running and how much memory they are using. Also give us an idea of what apps you plan on running.
