quick punch help

hey I'm having some issue in logic pro X. i have a vocal track recorded & i want to quick punch in to fix a messed up vocal part. When I press play, its suppose to play, & when I'm ready to punch in, i press R , it begins to record over what was previously recorded but it doesn't allow me to hear whats already recorded along with what I'm re-recording. I'm trying to hear what is already recorded & hear myself on the mic while leading up to where I'm going to punch in but soon as i press the punch in button, i can no longer hear what is already recorded. & that makes it hard to know when i have to punch in since the already recorded vocals don't play back. what do i do? i been trying for hours & got nothing. Input monitoring is enabled on the vocal track, allow quick punch in is enabled from the record drop menu on top, i right clicked the record button & turned off auto input monitoring. i even tried it with auto input monitoring on & nothing works, i don't know what to do anymore. & the thing is, a few days ago that was working just fine, exactly how i described that it should. now today, all of a sudden it won't work the way i want. someone please help. I'm losing my marbles here.
