I'm probably going to buy a new iMac soon, and I'm trying to figure out if an SSD is worth it to me. I definitely can't afford the 1000GB one, but maybe 500GB. However, if I do that, I'll probably have to move photos and music to an external drive. Does that undo the speed benefits of getting an SSD? I don't know how "sped up SSD" weighs against "slowed down connection to external drive".

Right now Photos is the program that really crawls (and crashes!) on my 2009 iMac, and I fear that shelling out for an SSD would be undone by the need to connect with an external drive. Or are my fears totally off-base with how the technology works?

Thanks in advance!

Your concern is unfounded. Having an SSD for your boot volume and applications and keeping your large libraries on external USB3 or Thunderbolt drives is much faster than having everything stored on a spinning hard drive.

What are you using for an iMac, now?

USB 3.1 is pretty fast compared to older USB 2.0.

Even with a standard spinning hard drive, data transfer over external USB 3.1 or USB-C should still be very fast.

Still won't be as fast as an internal bus drive SSD, but should not be a concern.
