Radio? Why do I have to sign and pay to listen ...

I don't understand. I used to be able to listen to some cool radio stations from around the world without signing up for anything, they were just there, being broadcast. What happened to that? Am I late to the party? I don't want to pay and buy anything, I just want to listen to the radio thru iTunes like I used to be able to. What is this obsession with the world to have to buy everything and own everything, I just want to passively listen to the radio. Is that gone?
