Lost iMessage connectivity between iPhone and iPad

I lost iMessage connectivity between my iPhone (6) and my iPad. This occurred when I downloaded the latest ios (11) update on both devices

On your phone: Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding > you might need to toggle the setting.

Unfortunately my iPad has no such command; nor does my iPhone (6)
