sharing iTunes music between two desktops

Hi all -

My wife and I share an iTunes library whilst each of us have our own desktops.  Unfortunately I can't see some of the music she has uploaded nor can she see some that I have uploaded.  In addition, after we share our music in iTunes preferences, she has to have iTunes running on her desktop in order for me to access her playlists and vice versa (see screen shots below).

Is this the way it's supposed to work?  I shouldn't think so, since I prefer to close open programs when I leave the computer, but...

Both preferences are set this way:

with her iTunes closedwith it open

Yes, iTunes has to be open on the shared library because the

sharing function is controlled by iTunes.
