Installed SSD in 2010 Mini (succesfully)

Finally got the time and the nerve to swap out the HDD

in my 2010 Mini that I am using as a home server with an

SSD.

The SSD is a Kingston SSDnow v300, 240 GB that I have

had lying around for awhile (leftover from recent upgrades

to bigger SSDs on my other Macs).

Prepared first with a Firewire drive interface I had laying around

from a portable whose HDD went to the great beyond.  I cloned

the internal drive using this to the SSD.  Once the clone was

complete, I booted to the clone on the SSD to verify that all was

well.

Satisfied that the clone was good, I proceeded following the instructions

on the OWC site to the letter.  There were a couple things.  Removing the

temperature sensor from the drive needs to be done very carefully.  I worked

my plastic spludger very slowly and carefully under the sensor at the end

opposite the wire until it popped off the old drive.  This is one step

that is critical because if you break it, fans go ballistic (though you could get control

software to manage that).

Some of the tape on the drive that secured some wires and such

didn't retain as much adhesive as was implied.  However, tape is

easily replaced/substituted.

Put it all back together, hooked up a keyboard, mouse and display and

turned power on with option key.  Screen came up with the recovery HD

and the main partition.  Booted to the main partition and in short order

my system was up and running.

It is now back in its previous home hooked up to all the drives and happily

running as my home server.

In all, for me the conversion went quite painlessly.  Then again, I was

an electronics design engineer and was used to dealing with some of

those tiny delicate connectors, which look so much smaller than they

used to, LOL!
