How do I restore my hard drive?

My hard drive crashed and I had it replaced so I need to restore my data. I have it on an external drive but Finder doesn't see it. Do I use Migration Assistant?

If your new hard drive already has a system on it, you can use Migration Assistant. But if you can't see the external hard drive in Finder, there may be a problem there too.
