I backup from an older version. Now that I moved from a different iPhone it needs to be updated before restoring. When I updated my iTunes to the latest version, my files cannot be restored. Contacts and memos are here but no photos and apps. How can I restore it?

Once the new iPhone has been updated, you need to erase it to start the setup process again and be able to use the iCloud Backup.

Follow the steps here:

But I didn't use iCloud when I backed up :( I only used ITunes on my PC and rely on to it. I didn't know that I need the latest version to be able to restore/retrieve my back up from a previous phone. I erased all the contents of the new iPhone but when I connected it to my PC it said that I needed the latest version to be able to restore my back up. So when I updated it, my backup's gone. I think it was saved on the previous version of iTunes? And the back up now that my latest version of iTunes was I think was my new phone now. :(

It works the same way on iTunes as it does on iCloud.

You need to complete the update of the new iPhone to the latest version of iOS.

When you complete the update erase the iPhone, and set it up again through iTunes. Unless you deleted the backup, iTunes should show you the available backups to restore from when you set it up.

Again read the link provided above carefully, and follow the steps there.

Okay. I will try that. Thank you!

Wait, is it okay if I already tried to sync my phone now to my iTunes on PC? Will the latest backup contain the sync new phone? Sorry for being stubborn

Yes. You'll need to erase the iPhone again to restore the backup.

Whether you've synced already or not it does not matter.

Just finish the iOS update, and then erase your device to start the setup process again. itunes can then restore the backup onto it.

Thanks a lot!
