mac installer not working

Having trouble with my iMac and the installer. I'm running up to date Lion 10.7.3. I first noticed this when I got an adobe flash update. Once I press the install button after the file has downloaded I get the usual computer admin box asking for my password. I fill this in and press OK and the admin box disappears but no installation happens. Its the same with any dmg file I download from the net but apps from the appstore download straight into launchpad fine.  Its not that the password is wrong as when I do type an incorrect password the admin box jiggles in the usual apple incorrect fashion and stays on the screen.

Any thoughts people?? I have software I need to download! ARGGHHH etc etc

Hi Gronkadelic

Were you able to resolve this problem? Please let me know if you did--I am facing the same issue.

Thanks much!

Regards

Gopal Shankar

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.

Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list. Post the messages from the last installation attempt, starting from the time when you launched the Installer or Software Update.

Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

OK I believe this to be the right thing...

That log extract spans less than one second. During that time, nothing abnormal happened.

Right I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to get on top of this but its really becoming a problem as I can't install any updates or new software...  over the last few days I've tried installing a few things  with the same thing happening as above. Once I reach the password section of installer and filling  and pressing OK the password box clears of my password and nothing installs. I know the password is correct as when I put in a wrong password the box jiggles. Its like it cant get past it for some reason. Is this Java Malmare or something?

Heres what console says, I've just listed the whole of the last few days as its not that long and should give a better picture as last time it appears I missed something out...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.
  2. Press the power button.
  3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
  4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Ok I tried this but when I go into safe mode and get to the account screen, when I go to sign in it asks for my password then on pressing return the screen goes white/grey for a few seconds then lands me right back on the sign in page again. Can't get any further than this. Again I know the password is correct and if I type in something else I just get the incorrect password jiggle. So its something affecting my admin password all over it seems?

So you can log in when you boot in the usual way, but not when you boot in safe mode?

Apparently not... My imac is set up so I'm automatically logged in when I boot up but I've just logged out and then wasn't able to log back in, exact same problem as above. Rebooting bypassed that and logged me in again though.

Please log out again and note the exact time: hour, minute, second. Try to log back in by entering your password, then reboot and log in automatically.

I'm sorry if this is too much unnecessary code but heres everything from logging out to rebooting:

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.

Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:

sudo rm /var/audit/current

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.

Reboot and test.

Hi Gronkadelic

Were you able to resolve this problem? Please let me know if you did--I am facing the same issue.

Thanks much!

Regards

Gopal Shankar

Hi, I had to do a total reinstall to fix it. Luckily I had everything backed up!

Thanks very much for this Linc.

I had exactly the same problem as the original poster, manifested as a login loop, unable to install anything, and also unable to unlock system preference panes - they would immediately relock.

I saw several errors like "audit_write" and "au_close failed" in the console.

Linc Davis suggestion to trash /var/audit/current fixed all of these problems.
