iMac 2011 upgrade with Samsung 850

Hi guys,

I have an iMac mid 2011. I am planning tomorrow to do a major upgrade with a computer technician. I would like to install a SSD, Samsung Evo 850 500 GB in the optical bay and replace the main HDD for another SSD Samsung Evo 850 1 TB.

1) Should i install Windows in the Samsung Evo 850 1TB disk to run Samsung Magician in order to upgrade its firmware? I have read in this same Apple Discussion forum that is the way to do it. And firmware should be as new as possible to use the full speed and resources of an SSD. I just don't know if 850 1 TB has the very latest firmware.

2) Should i use the main SATA port (where the main drive used to be) the SSD with 1 TB or 500 GB model? In HDD the larger the disk the better but i don't know if that is the same for SSD. I could install Mac OSX and all the software and have the larger disk for backup.

What do you suggest?

Thanks for any info! regards :-)

You're welcome!

iMac firmware updates are rare and normally come thru the software updater.

About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers - Apple Support

You should only go to Samsung to see if that SSD requires a firmware update for the Mac.

go to > https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools.html

click on Firmware and select Samsung Firmware Update for Mac Users.

Size and upgrade configurations are up to you at this point. For some other good upgrade options,

go to > OWC Memory and Performance Upgrades for iMac 2011 Models and scroll down towards the bottom of the page.

A word of caution for you and your computer technician.

That iMac's original Hard Drive has a built in temp. sensor and you will need a special cable in order to replace it with another Hard Drive or SSD. see > OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2011 Hard Drive Upgrade

Thanks for the fast reply,

I will look on the temp. sensor too. Do you know about firmware upgrade in this model or if it is better to have a large drive in the main port?

Cheers,

Thanks for the reply, sorry i miss the follow up...

I did install the SSD but not a temp. sensor. I use SMC to control fan speed so it does not go crazy, haha...

Cheers,
