My macbook pro cannot send or receive messages ...

Hello,

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) running on macOS Sierra version 10.12.6

For some time now I have not been able to successfully send or receive imessages. I realized that at first, I had two different apple accounts. One I made that was never used, and the one I've used since getting the iPhone 7+. I was able to switch over to the account I actually use and was able to get my contacts from the cloud. However, every time I try to send a message it does not go through. I checked the preferences of iMessage and made sure that my email and phone number were there as places I could be reached. On my phone, my macbook is the only other place in the messages settings for text message forwarding. I've tried following the guides for using iMessage on mac but nothing has worked. Any suggestions or ideas?
