Excel 2011 opens all files when launched

Suddenly, five years after installation on my MacBook Air, Excel 2011 opens all my files when launched. In Excel preferences of where you can assign a certain file to open when launched this field is and has always been blank. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall my Excel, but this does not help. When I now started my computer (without even launching Excel), it opened anyway and with the same result.

I am running Sierra, OS 10.12.6

This is - to put it mildly - driving me crazy
