My 2006 imac has a flickering display with colo...

I'm not too shure what is going on but I think it is a gpu error but I need some help a portion of the display just flickers and the rest you can see the picture but has lines through it. any help would be appreciated Thanks.

This is a "classic" description of a failing GPU. It's likely time to consider replacing it as repair parts may be difficult to locate and expensive.

That was a common problem with the Early 2006 (17" and some 20") Intel iMac models.

A few options include:

1. Have the Display replaced. (an expensive repair for an 11 year old computer)

2. Replacing the Computer, (expensive, but better than wasting money on an old system)

3. Connect up an External monitor and set it in front of the iMac. (I did that for awhile until I could replace the iMac)

So in your eyes which would be the cheapest option to repair because this is not my main machine I got given this by a friend because it turned on and the fans went to max then my mate picked it up and It started working I have a bit of experience with the insides of this machine as I have taken it apart many times  as it is only a music machine I don't whant to spend that much or buy a new machine any help would be appreciated thanks.
