I am getting an error message while charging my Apple Watch.  Using the same cables and charge cubes.  Only difference is the new watch update.  Is this a problem with the update or something else?

It may help follow the instructions here under "Get help" (which cover that error message), including contacting Apple Support via the link in the article if necessary:

• If your Apple Watch won't charge or it won't turn on - Apple Support

Be sure to use only an Apple or MFi-certified USB power adapter or third-party accessory in conjunction with the Magnetic Charging Cable when charging your Apple Watch. If you are already doing so, then it may help to use another such cable and/or power adapter.
