fans high, computer slow, AHT fixes problem
Hi folks,
My logic board was replaced a year or two ago due to the graphics issues.
Occasionally, when I boot the computer, the fans will run high and the computer will run slow. SMC doesn't seem to help.
When I run AHT, it kicks back a HDD error, but it's the one that Apple claims is erroneous. The weird thing is that after running AHT, the computer is fine for a boot or two. Loads quickly, fans don't run high, and is snappy.
After a few more boots, though, it reverts back to the high fans and slow running...Any ideas?
Use Activity Monitor to Kill Runaway Processes
Use Activity Monitor on your Mac
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity.
Should the above not prove helpful, then make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple.
Possible Fixes for El Capitan or Later
You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.
Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.
- Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
- Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
- Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
- Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
- Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button below Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
- Install Combo Updater Download 10.12.6 Combo Update and install.
- Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
- Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
- Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
- When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
- Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
- Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
- Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
- Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
- Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.
Thanks, but I already did a clean install...I've done the SMC reset. I don't think this issue, chronic as it is, is any of the quick fixes that work most times. I've checked the disks and repaired and all that. I took a look in Activity Monitor and it's not an application...this has something to do with hardware, I think...I'll try PRAM and all that, but I'm not optimistic.
Well, as you've stated the AHT says your HDD is defective. You should try replacing it and/or the short ribbon cable connecting the drive to the motherboard.
It does indeed...I was reticent to buy a new HDD to try to diagnose the problem given this (my same error):
Mac notebooks: Apple Hardware Test may report "HDD" alert - Apple Support
It says it generally takes multiple times to kick back the error....but "generally"....know what I mean. I wish there was some way to confirm that that was the issue.
Was wondering though if anyone could figure out why AHT seems to set it right for a few times.
Start by purchasing a new ribbon cable to replace the old one. See if that helps. Get an external drive to use for the startup drive to see if that runs the computer without issue. If it does, then swap the two drives to see if the newer one works internally.
Good call on the external drive idea. I swear I don’t remember this ever being an issue in my boot camp partition. But I’ll wait till it happens again and boot from an external.
