Alternate Apple ID

Good afternoon,

I'm having an issue that I have had no luck in getting resolved. I've found several threads online regarding similar issues and spoke with AppleCare and a friend who is an Apple Genius and we are all collectively scratching our heads. I am the IT Support for a company and one of my users is having an issue with their Apple ID. His nephew had logged into his Apple ID on one a device and created an iCloud account and tied it to the Apple ID of my client. Now, there is an unwanted "Alternate Apple ID" on his account and no way of getting rid of it.

I would like to point out that many people I have explained this to have had trouble grasping the problem and have confused it with an iCloud Alias or an apple ID Alternate email. That is not what this is regarding. When logging into appleid.apple.com, the fields we are able to edit are Your Name, Apple ID and Primary Email Address, and Alternate Email Addresses. There is another field that states Alternate Apple ID, with the email we would like removed from the account and all this field says is "You can use your Apple ID or your Alternate Apple ID to access everything you do with Apple."

What that says to me is, even if you change the primary apple ID password, apple resources are still accessible via the Alternate Apple ID. There is no where on the site that allows for removing the Apple ID. The closest I have gotten was on the iCloud web console, seeing the email listed as both a @me and @icloud account under the iCloud IMAP. There are NO aliases set up for iCloud email and we are unable to remove those addresses from the iCloud account.

On the user's iPhone, I went into the iCloud settings and Mail, Contacts and Calendars settings and tried removing the email address from there, but the only option I got was a toggle to turn it on or off. My concern is, if the alternate Apple ID is set up on another device, that can be toggled back on if my suspicion is correct that using the "Apple ID OR your Alternate Apple ID to access everything you do with Apple" is correct and that you can do anything from either and the passowrd to the Primary is not needed.

Also, under find my Phone, there is no device showing up that the user doesn't recognize so we aren't able to remove the account from the iCloud web console.

Does anyone have any idea how to remove an Alternate Apple ID from an account or who I need to contact to remove it? So far every lead I followed lead to a dead end.

Firstly, don't panic.

What has happened is that you have not set up mail for the AppleID that has been used to sign in to iCloud on the device, and your client's nephew has gone into iCloud settings, and turned on the Mail switch.

What happens next is that the device pops up a box that says 'Create a free @icloud.com email address to turn on iCloud mail.'

If the user taps 'Create' then a dialog appears for them to enter what address they would like @icloud.com   It also says 'You cannot change your iCloud email address after creating it'.

The bad news: You are stuck with that email address for the account forever.

The good news, it's only cosmetic, and it's not the AppleID of a third party, but is the email address of your AppleID account (even though the name is different).  You can prove this by going to appleid.apple.com and you will be able to sign in with the @icloud.com email address, and the password of the AppleID.

But it says "You can use your Apple ID or your Alternate Apple ID to access everything you do with Apple.".. so that means that person with that @me account setting can reset my account any time, isn't it?

That's correct, however that person is you.

hey Paul, I have a similar problem, but not as easily solved, or so I think.

My husband logged into my Apple ID, and connected HIS iCloud account to it. Now I can't get it to delete, and I don't have access to his account. I don't have any of my back ups, they are going to his iCloud account. How do I make that stop? I cannot remove his iCloud from my account to my knowledge?
