Problems with the partition map iMac 27" 2010

Some time ago my wife's iMac stopped booting. Just an empty white (grey) screen forever.

I was trying to boot from an external drive with no success - same white screen.

Today I found some time and opened the computer. I disconnected both internal drives and surprisingly could boot from a USB stick. I set the start up disk to this USB, reconnected the drives and booted into the Disk Utility.

When I run First Aid I get the following message:

Incomplete or inconsistent CoreStorage Physical Volume Set

Storage System Check exit code is 1

Problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting.

Is there a way to try to repair the disk? Or to try to recover data from these drives?

As my wife doesn't have a backup that is really up to date I would like to try everything possible before erasing the volume.

Thanks,

Pawel

Run First Aid on the disk (uppermost icon) multiple times until it states that it is repaired, or that it could not be repaired.

If it cannot be repaired then you can try booting from another Mac in Target Disk Mode and see if you can recover any data:

Use target disk mode to share files between two Mac computers - Apple Support

Another option would be to start up from another disk with an OS on it and see if you can read the internal drive from there.

Drive Partition and Format

  1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities' folder.
  2. After Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the side list.
  3. Click on the Erase tab in the Disk Utility toolbar. A panel should drop down.
  4. In the drop down panel set the partition scheme to GUID. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button and click on the Done button when it is activated.
  6. Quit Disk Utility.

The above will wipe the drive.

It may be possible to put the drive in an external enclosure then try accessing it on another computer. If the drive is accessible it may be possible to use file recovery software.

General File Recovery

If you stop using the disk it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on a bootable CD to enable use without risk of writing more data to the disk.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and Cisdem DataRecovery. Recovery software usually provides trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service like Drive Savers, which is very expensive.

The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
