Use Siri on Apple Watch to Add Items to Shoppin...

Background: Until recently, I was able to tell Siri from my Apple Watch to add an item to a Reminder list that I named 'My Shopping List'.  So I could say, "Hey Siri, add bacon to My Shopping List", and boom, 'Bacon' would show up on My Shopping List.  I also shared the list with my wife, and so if either one of us went to the store, we could pick up what the other person needed.

This was a seamless way to add something to my shopping list when I was driving or otherwise had my hands full, etc.  But I can no longer get this to work from my Apple Watch.

I can still do this from my iPhone, but it seems that Siri on the Apple Watch has lost this capability, probably with the most recent software update.  Siri complains, "You don't have a shopping list.  If you Handoff to your iPhone, I can create it for you".  Swiping up on the Handoff icon does not solve the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, or does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get this working again?

Hi Jim

Try restarting - or, if that doesn't work, force restarting - both your iPhone and your Apple Watch:

- Restart iPhone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears; Drag the slider to turn your iPhone off; When it has finished turning off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.

- Force restart iPhone: press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

- Restart Apple Watch: Press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; Drag the slider to turn off completely; Afterwards, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

- Force restart Apple Watch: press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

No luck.  Force restarted both devices but nothing.

Next try unpairing and re-pairing your Apple Watch and iPhone:

Your Apple Watch app on your iPhone takes backups of your watch automatically, including a fresh backup when unpairing via the app. When setting it up again after unpairing, choose to restore your Apple Watch from backup when offered the option (by the iPhone Apple Watch app). Most data and settings will be restored, with only a few exclusions: calibration data (from Workout and Activity apps), synced playlists, cards used for Apple Pay on your watch, watch passcode.

Still no luck.  Now Handoff icon is not even showing on my iPhone.

Some other things to try:

- Check that your contact card in the Contacts app on your iPhone contains your Apple ID email address and your iPhone phone number - and that it does not contain anyone else's email addresses or phone numbers.

- On your iPhone: go to Settings > General > Siri > check that My Info is using your contact card.

- On your Apple Watch: ask Siri "what is my name?"

- If any changes were made in Contacts: on your iPhone in the Apple Watch app to go My Watch > General > Reset > tap on Reset Sync Data (then wait for a minute or so for the background process to run).

- Check that Handoff is still enabled on your Apple Watch: on your iPhone in the Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > Enable Handoff (also try toggling this off / again).

- Check that Handoff is still enabled on your iPhone: Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps > Handoff (also try toggling this off / again).

- Sign out of iCloud and back in again on your iPhone: Settings > iCloud > tap on sign out at the bottom of the page, wait for a short while, then sign back in.

- Close and restart the Reminders app on your iPhone: Double-click the Home button to see all open apps, swipe to the Reminders preview screen and swipe it up to close the app, press the Home button to return to your Home screen, wait for a minute and then reopen the Reminders app.

- Restart both devices again after trying these steps and then re-test.

Beyond that, I suggest contacting Apple Support: https://www.apple.com/support/watch/contact/

Thanks for your help.  As best I can tell, this is a bug, or perhaps a new feature.  LOL.  Siri on the Apple Watch can't handle more than one list in the Reminders app.  I can tell Siri to add something to my default list, simply named 'Reminders', but if I create any new list, and give it any name, Siri on the Apple Watch complains saying I don't have such a list.  However, Siri on my iPhone has no difficulty addressing the list.  Thinking someone forgot to code this such that there could be multiple instances of lists in the Reminders app.

Think I got this working now.  Siri on the Apple Watch doesn't seem to like the word 'My' in a reminder list name, although it handled that fine until recently.  I changed the name to 'Jim's Shopping List' and now it seems happy.

Glad to hear that - well done!

I have the exact same problem and your solution did not work on my watch/iPhone. "Add Milk to my shopping list" used to work fine using my Apple Watch until very recently. I changed Shopping List to Lisa's Shopping List but no love. New bug?

ETA:

Oops, now it seems to work (maybe took a bit of time to upload the changed shopping list name to the cloud). Thanks!

This does not work anymore. I changed it to "Lisa's shopping list" and it worked for a little while but not anymore. Actually it's intermittent. I did restart the watch and the phone yesterday, and it worked once, but now it's broken. Is it a bug? Very annoying as this is one of the more useful features of the watch.

Hi, I'm a bit late to the party but thanks Jim for posting the question... I've been having this problem for a long time and its been driving me CRAZY.

Your response about Siri not liking 'My' got me thinking that the watch version of Siri is just eliminating the 'My' whenever you request it to add something to a list. I just discovered I could get around this by saying 'My' twice. Eg: "Hey Siri add milk to My My Grocery list"

This is interesting because Siri on the iPhone doesn't have a problem recognizing the command with either one or 2 'My's.

Thought this may be helpful info if anyone else is running into the same issue. In my case, I use a 3rd party app that syncs with a reminders list called 'My Grocery List' and I cant take the 'My' out of the title so this is my workaround.

This was working fine for me until I downloaded the new OS today. Now my watch will not recognize a list.
