LG 4K Ultrafine

I picked up two 4K Ultrafine displays on Sunday and was surprised to find that you can't daisy chain the second through the first on a late 2016 15" MBP. No biggie, two cords is fine I guess. They both worked just fine for the first few hours, but then one of them began to flicker a bit. Not a full-screen flicker, but almost like television static and some pixels were flashing between red, green, and blue. I presume that display is malfunctioning. Furthermore, the two displays combined didn't send enough power to keep the laptop charged. The battery indicator said "power adapter" but also "battery is not being charged." Go figure.

Is there a way to hard reset these, or do I need to bring them back to the store? Any one else figure out how to daisy chain them?

I feel there are major software issues with both the new MacBook, pro, etc running any 4K display.  Same charging issues with my 4K UltraFine displays.  My new mac will not display on my 4K tv either.  Very disappointing, wish I could return these monitors and new MacBook pro

I seem to also be having the pixel flickering issue. If the screen is completely black (for me working in AutoCAD either in a VM or using Boot Camp with a black background) I see some of the pixels flickering white. Have you figured anything out regarding flickering pixels? I have a late 2016 MacBook Pro on macOS 10.12.2 connected to the LG Ultrafine 4k display. The screen on the MacBook doesn't have this issue. Rebooting doesn't seem to fix the issue. I'm not sure that resetting the NVRAM OR SMC would do anything, but I haven't tried those yet. That is my next step.

I also have issues with MBP 2016 TB on Sierra 10.12.3 with flickering display (but just when I connect and after that disconnect from LG 4K Ultrafine Display)..take a look:

After restart, everything is fine..

What would you say, shell I go to store?

Hi, I too have 2 x 4K  22"Ultrafine displays and experience the same "flickering" issue you describe on just one (and always the same) display.  It's like random pixels are flashing red, green, blue and white as if its picking up some kind of noise interference.  Mostly noticeable on black backgrounds.  I also notice when it's doing this that the display won't wake from sleep or cold start.  I have to disconnect and reconnect the USB-C connection to the MacBook Pro for the screen to "wake up".

I've physically swapped over the displays but kept all the cables in place but the issue always stays with the same display, ruling out any issues with faulty cables / interference.

This is an intermittent issue for me. Sometimes I can resolve it and it'll be fine for days.  Most recently its been doing it for the last 12 hours and I've ended up calling up Apple Care to try and resolve it.  They're now suggesting I take my Mac and display into the store as they suspect it's a hardware issue.

Couple of things I've tried that sometimes make the problem go away however; NVRAM reset.  This worked for me once but consequent resets failed to fix it.

Unplug your "good" display.  And see if you can get it working with just the single "bad" display.  Once it's turning on from cold or wake up without an unplug/replug you'll probably find the flickering has stopped.  You can then introduce your "good" display again and all seems fine again until the next time.

Also, just a point on your charging issue.  The 4K displays don't output enough power to charge the 15" models.  Connecting 2 displays won't increase the charge as the MacBook Pro will select the first display you plug in and use that for power only.

Also, you can't daisy chain the displays because these are DisplayPort over USB-C displays with the additional ports dropping to USB 2.0 speeds (there basically isn't enough bandwidth to drive 2x4k displays over single USB-C).

Do you notice the random flashing of pixels going away after the monitor has been on for a little while? Lately, for me, I've noticed the pixel flashing will go away once the monitor and/or computer have warmed up. I'm not sure if the problem is at all related to operating temperature. The pixel flashing is most severe for me when the computer and monitor are still cold.

Like you I have tried connected the USB-C cable to all of the different ports on the computer and I still have the same issue.

Yep!  When cold it's much worse.  Once warmed up I don't think I notice it at all.

I'm taking mine back on Tuesday. Hopefully it will play ball and show the fault when they test it in store.

You'll have to let me know how it goes once you take it back in. I'm currently working with a senior Apple Care advisor on the issue. He hasn't mentioned anything about me bringing it back in yet. I have so far tried making a brand new account on my computer and logging into that, but the problem persists. I've also tried booting into safe mode, but that doesn't resolve it either. I have a hunch it is some kind of hardware issue since it seems to go away once it has been on for a little while. I wonder if it's the display warming up or if it's the computer warming up that seems to fix it.

I will keep you posted on my progress.

Last night I left my MacBook Pro on over night but the display turned off.  So in theory the MacBook Pro is warm but the display is cold. I'm experiencing the noise flicker again so I think it must be when the display is cold.

Returned it to the Apple Store last night. They were a bit unsure how to support the LG displays as they're not made by Apple but in the end we're happy to replace the unit with a new one (last one they had in stock!)

Setup once I got home and so far no problems!

Glad to hear you were able to get a replacement. I've been in contact with a senior Apple care advisor and we're still troubleshooting things, but I have a hunch it's a hardware problem. I may just make an appointment to go in and have them look at it like what you did.

Did you ever figure out how to fix this issue? I am having the same problem with my MBP 13" and the LG 4K display (the 27" model). Driving me crazy. Does this require a hardware fix or are they working on a driver fix? Thanks!

Since my screen was replaced I've not had any issues with pixel flicker.

I'm definitely concluding there is a hardware issue on some models.

Could be shielding related?

This was the problem you were having?

And you replaced your MBP or the LG monitor?

Just watched your video. That's not the same issue I was having.

Do you have the 27" 5k display? I've seen others with the same symptoms when connected to that display.
