MacOS keeps putting favorites in my sidebar
Since upgrading to MacOS 10.12.4, I've noticed an annoying problem. Every time I reboot my iMac (late 2015), the OS insists on putting Maps, iBooks and Photos in my sidebar. I remove them and, upon reboot, **** but there they are again. Same apps, same location on the side bar. Is there any way to prevent this?
Thanks.
Hello JimHardy,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that since upgrading your iMac, several apps continue to appear on the sidebar after restarting. I have a few steps that can surely help.
First, it's important to confirm the appropriate steps were taken to remove the apps. If you're seeing the apps in the Dock, Control-click on that particular app and make sure "Keep in Dock" isn't checked in Options. Please review the additional information in the following link:
macOS Sierra: Use the Dock
If you're referring to the sidebar in Finder, please review the steps in the link below:
macOS Sierra: Customize the Finder toolbar and sidebar
If the issue persists, please let us know any other steps you've tried and if you're experiencing this issue with the Dock or in Finder.
Have a great day!
Sorry I wasn't clear earlier. I was talking about apps that keep showing up in my dock after a reboot. It's always the same three apps (Maps, iBooks and Photos) that show up and always in the same position on the doc. I did as you suggested and did a control click on each of them while in the dock and there is no "Keep in Dock" option. Under options, all I see is "Remove from Dock". So, instead of just dragging them from the dock, I used that option and then did another rebook. The apps again show up.
I've been using the dock for as long as there has been a dock and never seen anything like this.
Have you tried - with a Finder window open - at the top of your screen, going to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar, and then unchecking the functions that you don't want? That may work better than deleting them from the sidebar itself.
Sorry my first post was confusing. This isn't a finder issue but one related to persistent items in the dock.
"Keep in Dock" is not there in Sierra anymore, correct.
Perhaps this helps:
Click the apple menu (top left),
select ForceQuit,
select RelaunchFinder.
This will relaunch Finder and Dock and empty the caches for it.
If this is not enough:
in SystemPreferences open "Dock",
check the bottom item "Show indicators for open applications".
Now see if these 3 apps are running (a small dot underneath),
if one is running, click it, it comes in the forward window: Quit the app from its menu, then remove the Dock item.
Then it should not return.
Lexiepex,
I tried your suggestions to no avail. If the persistent apps have already been removed from the dock, restarting the finder had no effect. I then rebooted my mac and, of course, the three apps are back in the dock. So, I then restarted the finder at this point, the three apps remain.
Also, I always have used the option to show indicators for open apps. No indicators have ever been shown for the three.
So, I can drag the apps out of the dock but they return - but only after a system reboot. I'm at a loss as to why.
Ok Jim,
something is loaded at startup for these. They are not in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, otherwise they would be running (?).
There are two Dock.plists, I suggest to delete both. They will be recreated immediately. Then you have to check all settings for the Dock again (in SystemPreferences) for your preferences if they are not the default.
-- StartupDisk (normally MacintoshHD)->Library->Preferences: com.apple.dock.plist
-- HomeFolder (yourname)->Library->Preferences: com.apple.dock.plist

Thanks for your suggestion but that didn't fix the problem. I deleted both plist files, reboot the computer and adjusted the dock to what apps I want in it and it's preferences. I then rebooted again (as this is when the problem shows up) and the same three apps, in the same order show up yet again on the dock.
Does it happen with any other Dock items or just those three.
Also are you logged in as an administrator, or a guest when you are doing this?
It's just the three apps. All other dock items are just fine.
I don't enable guest access and, yes, my account as admin privileges.
I did just discover that it not only happens when I reboot but if I logout/login, without a reboot.
Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock. Move the .db to your desktop.
Then try a dock reset.
Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
Ran killall Dock, logged out/in - the three apps are back in the doc.
Removed those apps from the dock and then removed db files from
~/Library/Applications Support/Dock
Again ran killall Dock, logged out and back in
- the apps again have returned to the dock.
Do you mind running an etrecheck list for us?
