iOS 11: problems with FaceTime

I updated my iPad 2017 to iOS 11 a couple of days ago and am having trouble with FaceTime. After a call the system is now just showing the view from the front camera (me) full screen and there are no icons to allow me to switch to the back camera. Indeed, I see no icons at all.

Also when I popped out of FaceTime to look at Calendar, there was no green bar at the top of the screen to return to FaceTime.

Another strange thing was that the ring tone had changed to a dull ringing sound. However, when I look at Settings->Notifications->FaceTime the ring tone is the old one I know from previous iOS versions.

I have tried restarting FaceTime and the iPad but to no effect.

All very strange. Anyone having similar problems?
