iMac powers down when data cable is connected

Hi Everyone...My 2009 27" iMac won't start with the data cable connected. It starts fine without but of course there's no power to  the screen. As soon as i plug in the data cable the machine gently powers down . I think its tripping out the power supply as i have to pull the mains plug to re-start it. This happens even without the screen connected to the other end of the cable. I've tried both ends of the cable and then replaced the cable but its the same.

This is so annoying and has me totally stumped. Hope someone can help.
