using iMessage on an iPad

hi,

My iPhone broke, so I'm trying to turn on iMessage on my iPad so that I can send and receive text messages using my phone number. I tried to add my phone number under the 'Reachable at' section on the apple website, but it says that the number is already being used on my account.
