macbook backlight wont turn off

the backlight on my 2015 macbook bro turns on after i open the laptop even when i have already turned off the backlight completely. when the light turns on after i open it, i go to press the key to lower the light and it wont turn off. i have to press the key make it brighter then i have to lower it all the way to turn it off. this happens all the time even when it bright out. this has been going on for about 5 months and im fed up with it. i am running macOS sierra 10.12.6. please help.

Resetting SMC could solve the problem.
