Finder & Notifications

Hi

Turned my Mac on this morning and needed to use spotlight to locate some files on external drives.  I immediately noticed all files have been renamed with ? (question mark in a square box) replacing each letter of the original file.

This is for files and folders on external and internal drive.

I've also noticed that email notification are coming up where the senders name has been replaced by a ? in a box again for each letter of the original name. 

Any help or suggested fixes would be appreciate.
