Having trouble restoring/reinstalling OSX on a ...

So I'm trying to reinstall or restore my MacBook Air. I have done this in the past with no issues. In fact, I'm kicking myself right now because the MacBook Air was working just fine. I just decided I wanted a clean install. So I rebooted using COMMAND-R. And got to the install OSX screen. I clicked install. Almost immediately I get an error, and the iPhone picture is too big to upload here BUT it says, 'install failed. OS X cannot be installed on your computer. The OS X upgrade couldn't be started because the disk MacBook Air is damaged and can't be repaired. '

Ok, so then I goto disk utility. To try and erase the main disk. Main partition, you know the one that's 128GB-- not the two other disks (partitions?) that have the OS X install or restore stuff on them. I try to erase the main MacBook Air disk.... and get another error:

'Disk erase failed with the error: couldn't unmount disk'.... so I think I know, I can't erase the main disk? Maybe?

But anyway like I said the laptop was working 100% perfect. I just wanted a clean reinstall. Now I can't get the old OS X to even come up. And upon reboot, even without typing any commands, it goes to the OS X install (recovery install???) and I'm in this vicious loop.

Can't get it to work. Previously, when I wanted a clean install, I just reinstalled it this way and no problems after 20-30+ minutes I had a perfect stock factory install.

So, any gurus can please help me? I can't even imagine that anything broke or.... it was running OS X just perfectly. Why did I even have to mess with it? Oh yea, cause I wanted a clean computer is all. lol.

Please tell me I'm just doing something wrong or there's a work around? Currently I am running the Apple Hardware Test (with extended testing)... which takes a while... but it displays. I errors yet and is 65% done.  I'll update if that gives me any info but any response to help me would be greatly appreciated.

I just can't imagine that I did anything to break anything. That's why I *use* apple, is because I never get these kinda dumb errors.

Please someone tell me just what *i* am doing wrong and how to get my laptop back. Sheesh this stinks.
