ios 11 and MacBook Photos import does not work

macOS Sierra latest version on MacBook Pro purchased last week. 

iPhone 6s on ios11 downloaded today 

When I connect the phone to the laptop Photos opens up on the laptop as always. However when I click on the phone icon tonaee which photos need to be imported, it shows all of them, wheras I have all of them (except for 10 photos) already imported over the years. 

Called Apple support - three levels of people. No clue. 

I did some investigating and connected the phone to a windows machine to see the actual file names. Turns out that a file such as IMG_1001.Jpg along with its IMG_1001.aae now has a new file called IMG_E1001.jpg. 

So because of this Photos assumes that a photo was not imported earlier. I verified it my importing a photo already imported before and in the Get Info it shows that “E” in the file name preceeding the numbers!

Does anyone have a fix for this? What a waste, the upgrade to ios 11. Everything worked fine earlier.
