iPod 5th Gen

Hi all,

Recently I updated my iPod Touch 5th Gen to the latest firmware for that model (iOS 9.3.5) and I am no longer able to add or delete music from the device through Itunes.

Basically when I add music it comes up in the music tab greyed, ready to sync. Then Itunes run through various sync cycles without adding the music.

I have tried: Restating the device. Using a new cable. Restarting my computer. Restoring from backup. Restoring the iPod. And of course... googling this for hours and hours.

Deleting music to make more space through Itunes removes it on the computers Itunes iPod music window but when I open my iPod I can still find and play that music that was supposedly deleted. Clearly Itunes does not want to communicate with my device even though it is connecting and reading it fine.

I'm at a loss here. I have 5 years worth of music on that iPod and it seems that updating it has bricked my device.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

What version of iTunes are you running?

Cheers,

Running the latest iTunes. 12.6.1.25

OK, I'm going to put a Bat Call out for our resident iTunes expert to see if he can work with you on this. Stand by - not sure if he is even on tonight, but that's who you want to be looking at this.

Cheers,

Thanks so much. Really appreciate the help.

You are most welcome Bat Call has been issued!

Also update your itunes to latest version. I dont thing there is any problem while you are updating your ipod. After itunes update did you find your ipod inside your itunes device tab. It this is happen then you can easily sync your ipod.

Also re authenticate computer on which itunes is installed.

Thanks for the reply. My iTunes is updated to the latest version: 12.6.1 and I have tested it on another laptop which has an older version and it does the exact same thing, leading me to believe it's an error with the iPod software update.

The iPod always appears in the device tab when connected. When I press sync, it runs through the sync cycle but the music trying to be copied across to the iPod stays grey and wont copy across.

Have tried re-authenticating my computer and the issue is the same.

Try the following all-purpose steps for dealing with erratic device or sync behaviour (including the troublesome grey dotted circles). They assume that all of the content you want on the device is in your library ready for restoring. If it isn't see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device first. I would also recommend you copy everything out of the camera roll if you haven't already.

  1. Backup device.
  2. Restore as a new device.
  3. Restore the backup you made earlier.

Use an encrypted backup (*) if you want to preserve passwords, Wi-Fi settings, web history and health data where appropriate. I also suggest syncing with a selection of playlists (unless you're using iCloud Music Library) rather than manually adding content as, if nothing else, the process above is easier to do if you ever have to go through it again.

(*) The downside with backup encryption is that if you forget the password when you need it again, which could be years later, you may need to invoke a workaround to turn off encryption as shown in Re: disable encrypted backups, which can only help if your device is in a state that can backup to iCloud.

I am having the same issue. I manually sync all my music. I've already restored it to factory and put the music back. But when I try to change anything on the iPod, it will do a few steps but never update. Every time I do a hard boot, it takes me back to the new update screen, and I have to sign in etc, etc all over again. Please help. I have over 6000 songs on my iPod and I need this working!!!

As I mentioned above I really recommend syncing with selected playlists. It is more efficient when reloading the device than manually queuing up content to put back on. If iTunes seems to have trouble copying the data reliably then it may help to exclude the iTunes folder from any real-time anti-virus scans. See also the break-up large transfers method described in Corrupt iPod Classic.
