   I just bought an Intuos drawing pad to use for design.  I need to know where I can learn about software.  The feature I'd like to have is pretty basic and perhaps most drawing software has some version of this but what I'm looking for is the ability to work with photos.

    I'd like to be able to take a photo and change the color of areas by tracing over them and "filling" with a color palette.  And, draw right over the image and then add color.  There's probably a term for this ie "overdraw" "freehand edit" etc. I really only need this feature if anyone has a direction or suggestion or link to look at, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Not necessarily - why? Because you are asking about software to work with a third party device (Intuos). It might be a better idea to find the Intuos support site (or discussions, if there are any) and ask there. You can also google "software compatible with Intuos" or similar. Like these:

After you decide which ones you want to consider, you can check those websites to make sure it is compatible with your Mac model/OS version.
