Why does my iCloud Drive Desktop icon suddenly ...

I have iCloud Drive set to store data from my Desktop and Documents folders, and then I have the iCloud Desktop icon sitting at the top of my Finder sidebar for easy access. I have this setup on both of my Macs since the early days of Desktop file storage. It's never been a problem, until now.

In the last few days, something changed in Sierra so that the Desktop icon that once lived at the top of my Finder sidebar is gone. It's not in the iCloud section at the bottom of my Finder sidebar, either. This happened on BOTH of my computers. So I turned off Desktop/Documents storing then turned it back on, so that the Desktop icon would reappear. I dragged the icon back to the top of Finder sidebar. It stayed there for a few hours, and then it suddenly vanished again.

This is happening on both computers, which is very strange. All of the files in the Desktop folder are still there -- it's just the icon that isn't cooperating. What changed in the OS to make this such a problem?

I'm running Sierra 10.12.6 on both machines. One machine is a Mid-2014 MacBook Pro Retina 15", and the other is a Mid-2013 MacBook Air 11".

. It's not in the iCloud section at the bottom of my Finder sidebar, either.

Did you enable the iCloud items to show in the Finder in the Finder preferences?

Check, if they are still enabled.

  • Bring the Finder forward by clicking somewhere on your Desktop,
  • Then use the command "Finder > Preferences ⌘," or the keyboard shortcut ⌘,
  • Now open the preferences tabs for the sidebar and the Desktop to enable all iCloud items to show in the Finder.
