Inactive apple id

I am currently running several apple devices, 2 iPhones, and iPad mini and a mac mini.  The email i used to have for my apple id is no longer active so I created a new apple id and deactivated the old one.  However for some reason this change did not work on the iPad. So at this time my iPad is connected to the cloud and the find my iPad app via my old id, i can not log out of it without entering the password, which i have forgotten and I can not recover the password because apple no longer recognizes the old apple ID.  How do I fix this so I can connect the iPad back to the cloud and get all of the devices working  together again?
