No mic working at iMac

Hi there,

I noticed yesterday that no mics were working with my iMac Mid 2011 when testing Skype. I have OS X El Capitan v10.11.2 and 20 GB installed.

Outside Skype, I also went to Settings>Sound>Input and selected "Line In" and spoke there to test "input level" and there were no movements. Everything OK if I choose Internal Microphone.

I can hear sounds and music but can not record anything or have friends hear me. Tried various headphones with mics but no mics are working with my iMac though I can hear everything OK with the same headphones.

Probably not a hardware issue as the the same mics are working when tested under Windows 7/Bootcamp installed on the very same iMac.

I pretty much applied all suggestions at the following web pages but problem persists.

I love my iMac and appreciate very much how things work smoothly but this is getting annoying.

Thx very much.

First check the article noted below to see if you have it configured correctly.

Thx for the prompt reply. I have done pretty much everything in the article you have pointed out to. Pls note that this was also one of the two articles I had pasted in my original message saying that I had retty much applied all suggestions in both.

Okay, please try resetting the SMC and PRAM (the SMC may take 2-3 attempts to work). The directions are in iMac SMC and PRAM reset.

Also, make sure nothing is plugged into the jack in the back of the computer. That could be the problem.

Tried both (again) exactly as described with nothing plugged into headphone/mic jack and the SMC thing three times as you suggested. The problem continues as before.

Your microphone might be clogged with dust, try flicking your finger against the plastic right next to where the microphone is above the screen.

Sorry but unclogging did not help either. Pls also note that I have tried more than one mic at my iMac and none is working while my favorite mic is working when I try it under Windows 7. Thank you anyway.

Are you saying the internal mic does not work w/Skype either?   Or it does since everything is ok?

Probably not a hardware issue

It could possibly be even though your mic works using Windows.  To confirm hardware problem, run Apple Hardware Test & post back the results.

It appears you have done all the troubleshooting efforts yourself & those supplied by .  Another alternative would be to lug your iMac to your local Apple Store or an APSP for confirmation.  Diagnostic testing is FREE!!!!

When I said no mics are working, I meant external mics only. Internal mic is working fine. Will try the hardware test and post here. Thank you.

I have OS X El Capitan

Check w/the 3rd party headphone/mic manufacturers for compatibility w/EC if you have not already done so.

I had mentioned before that I tried a number of headphones with mics and none of them worked as mics. The two I tried are both compatible with Apple products (Bowers&Wilkins P5 Headphone and an Apple EarPod with remote & mic). Both are working fine as mics and headphones when I plug them into my iPhone 5s.

Not ALL of Apple's products.  Prior to purchasing anything for a Mac, you must first confirm hardware as well as software compatibility.

Requires software version 1.0.3 for iPod nano (4th generation), 2.0.1 for iPod classic (120GB), and 2.2 or later for iPod touch (2nd generation).

Suggest that you check out the online & off line Apple Stores for mics &/or headphones that will work for your model iMac & current software.  Any product that is not clear on the matter, you can discuss w/the sales staff (or customer service for the online store).  They will more than happy to help you w/your concerns.

If you do the above, & find something you are interested in that will work on a Mac, compare shop at other Apple resellers.  You may get a better price.

Can you get your money back for the Bowers & Wilkins P5 Headphone?  Shame cause they look really nice.

Both used to work fine with my iMac as mics and that's good enough for me as a proof of compatibility also taking into account with a few more facts I know about cables, jacks, headphones and computers. I don't think it is worth spending any more time on this compatibility issue. Thx for your time anyway and pls let me know if you have any other suggestions.

With El Capitan?????

The last paragraph in my response dated

I have no more suggestions to offer.  Your iMac needs to be physically examined & diagnostic tested since you feel you have no compatibility problems.  My powers are limited in that matter.

Results of the AHT????

Good luck!!!!!
