my usb keyboard is not recognized

I powered down and re-powered my iMac27 (mfg. 2013). Now my usb keyboard will not work, but when I use preferences to set up the bluetooth keyboard and I try to disconnect the usb keyboard it recognizes that it's attached, but it will not function
