How do I sync iBooks bookmarks between devices?

When I am reading a book on iBooks and I bookmark the page and switch devices (from iPhone to iPad for example) the bookmark is not synced. Any suggestions?

if they use the same appleID and use iCloud it should sync automatic does between my iPad iPhone and mac

If they weren't using the same Apple ID wouldn't the book itself not sync?  It's only the bookmark that doesn't transfer over...
