Apple Watch Series 2 Randomly Turns Off
Hi,
A week ago, I got an Apple Watch Series 2, 42mm.
This is my first Apple Watch and I've been using it everyday without major problems, but sometimes the watch will just turn off by itself. This has happened twice and both times it happened a few minutes after logging a 45 minutes workout.
I'm aware that the watch will turn off if the battery is low, but both times the battery was charged to around 85% (I charge the watch overnight and workout in the morning). The watch turns on normally if I press the side button.
The watch software is up to date (watchOS 3.1) as well as my iPhone's (iOS 10.1, iPhone 6 64GB). I'm not sure if this is relevant, but my watch is the Japanese model with Felica.
Is anyone having the same problem? Any tips on how to fix this issue would be really appreciated!
Thanks.
Hi
If your watch face includes the Battery complication, it is possible that accidental screen interactions are causing your issue.
Tapping on the Battery complication shows the battery charge level along with a large button for placing the watch into Power Reserve mode.
You may wish to consider using your watch for a while without that complication on the watch face, to see whether the issue recurs:

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for your reply.
I use a very simple face with just the Workout complication when I exercise (see attachment). I also disable "wake screen on wrist raise", "wake screen on crown up" and lock the screen to prevent accidental tapping, so I don't believe it's related to the Battery complication.
I've had this happen a couple of times with my Series 2 as well (in the two months or so that I've had it now).
I use the same watch face you do. No battery complication. The second time it happened was this morning (first time was weeks ago). One minute it was fine, the next thing I know it was off. It was at over 95% power when this happened, and I highly doubt it was in power reserve mode.
Same thing happened to me in the morning today just after walking to my office, my wife has reported this to me about her watch in several occasions. I wonder if it is either a software issue or it has to do with cold weather and that shuts off the battery. I will make a note everytime it happens and continue reporting to see if apple will address the issue.
I've had the same problem. I only bought my series 2 Nike+ watch yesterday, and it's already turned itself off randomly twice.
I did have the battery complication on the watch face for one of the times that it turned off, but for the other one I didn't. I've also tested putting the watch into power reserve mode, and it's not the same. The watch has twice just completely died.
I'll persevere, but I'll be returning it if it happens much more.
I just had this issue occur this morning. Another similar issue happened to me 2 weeks ago, also. That time, the watch restarted itself. This morning, it shut off completely. However, both times I had the motion face (jellyfish) going, with the weather complication at the top, date in the middle, and calendar showing events at the bottom. And earlier this morning, my calendar complication froze, and I hadn't used the watch yet.
Last week, when no issue occurred, I had the motion face (again, jellyfish), date at the top, and weather at the bottom.
So I definitely believe it's a software issue, as far as the interactions between complications and the watch faces.
Mine turns off and restarts automatically a few times a week. It's always inside, so not weather related, and no particular pattern.
Hi,
I have exatly the same issue. New Watch Nike+ 42mm, 3Weeks old. Without any reason or repeatable cause the watch shuts down and restarts straight away. It happens up to once a day. Sometimes not even actively using the watch.
Just today the screen "froze" and I had to force a shutdown and restart.
I haven't found any solutions jet, but quite a few users experiencing this problem.
Hope it will be fixed quickly.
THX
Apple Watch Series 2, 42mm running WatchOS 3.1. Last night we had had our second instance of it appearing to shutdown and had to hard reset to get it back online.
In addition, every time the instance occurred, I unpaired and re-paired the watch and phone. It shut off on me again this morning, this time with the simple watch face with a weather and date complication. Unpaired and re-paired again... if it happens one more time, I'm making a call to Apple.
So far mine has restarted once, and has shut itself off 3 times. First time last Tuesday, and the second time yesterday morning, and third, tonight. Apple support did over the phone diagnostic, and showed no hardware issues. So it's likely software related. Apple support is giving me a follow call tomorrow.
I too have had this issue on my space gray 38mm. Happens maybe once a month. No idea what's causes it. Very frustrating when you realize you've not had any health tracking for a couple hours.
My wife just bought a series 2 on the 27th of Jan., and suddenly yesterday, the 31st, the watch randomly shut off on her. Completely dead. No low battery indication or anything. Couldn't power it up. My wife placed it on the charger for a few hours (even though she had charged it over night) and did not receive any notifications of charging, or the green clock. When I got home from work I tried a hard reset, but it didn't work. I put it on the charger, and while on the charger I tried a hard reset and that worked for some reason. I took it off the charger, confirmed the battery was at 100%, and then gave it to her, and within 30 min. the thing blacked out again. We left it on the charger over night, but in the morning it was still blacked out. The only way to power it on is by having it docked and doing a hard reset, and even then, it is only functional for 30 min. at most before blacking out again.
I called Apple Support today and they had us unpair and reset the watch to factory settings. They then ran diagnostics and said everything was fine. 30 minutes later the watch is dead again.
Calling them again and asking for a replacement.
