Macbook Air 2014 shuts down when closing the lid

I have an early 2014 Macbook Air running macOS Sierra version 10.12.5 and basically, when I close the lid, opening it again quickly prompts me to enter the password (as if it only entered sleep mode) but if the lid is closed for ~20 seconds or more, when I open it again, it seems to shut down. When I open the lid, I see the keyboard lit up for just a second, but the screen is black the whole time and I then need to press the power button for ~7 seconds for it to turn back on, at which point I sign in and it takes at least a minute to load my desktop.

Things I have already tried:

Disabling Smart Sleep by typing the following commands in Terminal (Have reverted since)

$ sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

$ sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false

Deleting the Wi-Fi adapter and re-adding it

Both of these solutions were found here: SOLVED: Restarts when put to sleep - MacBook - iFixit, though neither worked to solve the issue.

I also tried resetting the SMC using the Apple instructions found here: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support, though this also didn't work.

I saw a suggestion saying sometimes a case can cause issues with a sensor, and I tried removing the case around the computer and the issue has still persisted.

Someone at the Apple store mentioned this might have something to do with some sensor that might require an entire internal board being replaced, costing ~$400. I'd prefer to not have to do this. Are there any other things people can recommend that I try or maybe some sort of workaround to be able to close the lid and have the computer go into sleep mode and not shut down? Any help is appreciated, thank you.

I'm going through the exact same issue too. It's also VERY slow. I hope that we can get an answer before our computers crash down completely.
