Songs are greyed out

I connected my iPod to my mac two days ago to add music and some of my music was greyed out.  I looked online for an answer and NOTHING I tried worked.  I tried reverting back to a previous version of iTunes (I had version 12.7) and downloaded 11.4 and 12.4 and neither corrected the problem.  Tried re-syncing, tried any solution you can find on apple and other websites.  The songs can be played on iTunes, but not on the iPod and they are all checked, but have a dotted circle next to them.  Not all songs bought through iTunes, but that is not the issue; there are songs on iPod that are not greyed out and were not bought on iTunes.  I am at a loss what to do except to use another media player for iTunes.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. If you need more information, let me know.
