Messages Emojis Shut Down Touchbar

In Messages, when I touch the emojis icon the touch bar goes black. 1. How do I get the bar back without changing applications? 2. Why do the emojis not work in Messages, which is when one would use emojis? The icon works in other applications.

Hello Lisa,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that your Touch Bar goes black when you touch the emoji icon. The emoji icon shows you the emoji's you use most. If the Touch Bar is blank when you tap the emoji icon it could be that you have not used any emoji's yet and therefore do not have a most recent collection yet. I recommend using the escape button which is shown as Esc on the left side of the Touch Bar. The following articles have information about the Touch Bar and using the Escape button:

Best Regards.

I have this problem also and I use the emojis all the time. So I have a recent and continuing collection. Your answer above is therefore not helpful in the least. This is most frustrating and appears to be a widespread problem. Moreover, there is no button to hit when the bar goes blank. It’s just a black, blank bar. The only thing that helps is restarting the messaging app.

Thanks! I was afraid that I'd have to restart the entire computer. Restarting just the Messages app worked perfectly.

I don't think you understand. By "black" we mean totally, completely, absolutely black and empty. Dead. Nothing showing at all. As if the power has been turned off.

Quitting and reopening Messages fixes it; touching the emoji icon shows the emojis, and leaves everything else intact.

Otherwise, the only way to bring the Touch Bar back to life is to move to a different app and come back. When we do, it all looks normal, unless we touch the emoji icon, which kills it again.

I have exactly the same issue. It only happens when I am using the Messages app (as far as I able to observe). It is also not consistent. On some occasions I am able to use the emojis in the Touch Bar without a problem, on other occasions, it goes entirely blank. It appears to be random and is very frustrating. I have not had an issue with the Touch Bar in any other of the applications, only in the Messages app. There is clearly a bug here that needs to be fixed. (see what I did there? )

I'm having the same issue as well. Is a fix or workaround available yet?

The bug is not lack of recent emojis appearing. In iMessages selecting emojis will completely blank out the touch bar and requires a complete reboot to make work again. I don't know how you're not aware of the issue, there are multiple tickets addressing this problem and none of them have been resolved by Apple.
