messages on imac

I am confused on the accounts needed to run messages.  When I go to preferences I am given 3 accounts.  An iMessage account, my AIM account and Bonjour.  Can messages be run without AIM?  It seems I am logged into my iMessage and AOL.

You only need your iMessage account to send iMessages (via the Messages app) to other Apple devices (running either macOS or iOS). You do not need either AIM or Bonjour for this. Bonjour is used when you want to send iMessages to other devices connected to the same local network WITHOUT going over the Internet.
