Help for Guitar

Hey Everyone

Purchased my new iMac and a few bundles including Logic Pro X. I cannot find information on what I need exactly to use an external guitar to plug into the Mac for use with this program. I have configured a few different things but for some reason I will got sound through my speakers. It records but with no sound, only on play back. Could someone let me know what I need to purchase to use external instruments on this and other programs. Thanks
