10.12.4 display sleep bug

After upgrading to 10.12.4 yesterday, I'm getting a weird display sleep issue with my iMac 5K. If Energy Saver turns my displays off (set for 15 minutes), the iMac display won't come back on without a reboot. Strangely, my external Dell 4K Monitor will come out of sleep.

Super annoying. Silly bug.

Read this Apple Knowledge Base article.

If your Mac doesn't sleep or wake when expected - Apple Support

Yeah, I saw that article and already tried resetting the SMC and the NVRAM. No luck. This iMac had been completely stable until the 10.12.4 update.

I can confirm that I am experiencing the exact same issue, with what sounds like the same setup (iMac 5K + Dell 4K monitor).  This never occurred prior to 10.12.4 update.  If I leave the external monitor disconnected, I do not experience this issue.

Thanks! Helpful to know it's not just me and seems to be related to 10.12.4.

I have a similar problem with 2015 MacBook Pro Retina, macOS Sierra 10.12.4. The lid would be closed with an external monitor connected via Thunderbolt/MiniDisplay port. Everything is running fine - I can sleep my laptop and wake it up - the external monitor would be turned on right away. I have not tried using the external monitor and my laptop's screen at the same time. However, if I disconnect my laptop from the external monitor and open up the lid, then the screen remains black. I can hear music playing from my laptop, I can pause it, etc. The laptop seems to be running, however the screen remains black. The only way to turn on the laptop screen is to reboot the system. This is far from ideal. I had no problems with 10.12.3. This is a huge regression in my opinion.

Same here with iMac 5K + Dell 4K monitor

I'm also having this issue with my 2015 Retina iMac attached to a Dell 4K display. Everything was working fine until I upgraded to 10.12.4.

In my case, I sometimes (but not always) run into an issue where neither display will wake up. When this problem shows up, I've been remoting into my iMac from another device and choosing Restart from the Apple menu.

I tried resetting the PRAM, which didn't help. I'm also planning to reset the SMC, but don't think this is likely to help.

I've also uninstalled Duet Display and turned off Night Shift to see if this makes a difference.

At the risk of just sounding like I'm "piling on", I too have had this issue. I installed 10.12.4 on Wednesday (03/29) and ever since when I come out of power saver (display off but computer running) the iMac screen stays dark. Well, almost. The screen comes on for a split second and then stays off. I have 2 4K monitors hooked up and they both come on like normal. At first I just rebooted the computer since I was able to access the menu from either of the other monitors but after having to do this every time I started looking for answers and came across this site. My iMac was working perfectly prior to the update and the only thing that changed was the update. I don't have the Night Shift option enabled and I have never used Duet Display. I also do not have any of the other apps installed that I have seen on other forums. So until this gets fixed I have disabled my display power settings ("never" in energy saver settings). Hopefully this will be addressed soon.

I am seeing it as well with configuration (iMac 5K - 27" Late 2015 + Dell 4K monitor P2715Q).  I have been able to initiate a reboot via the Dell monitor desktop but haven't found a way to wake up the iMac display.

Same exact issue here as well, 5k iMac with 2 LG 4k displays hooked up.  Started after 10.12.4 update.

I am also experiencing this same issue with similar setup (iMac 5K + LG 34in external monitor).  This issue began once the 10.12.4 update was applied.

I have the same issue with the iMac screen black after sleep with an external Asus 4k display

I have the same problem with a Dell P2415Q 24" 4K.  I have found a temporary workaround is to turn off the Dell screen before putting the iMac to sleep.  Then after you wake up the iMac, turn the Dell monitor on.  Everything should go back to where it was.  Unfortunately, I don't always remember to turn off the Dell 1st before sleeping and then I have to power down the iMac and restart.  Hopefully a new macOS update fixes the issue soon.

Thanks for that workaround. My problem with that suggestion is I know me and I would either forget to turn off both external displays or get really annoyed with having to turn on the monitors every time.
