What is OSXFUSE for Mac

I found this on my computer and I do not know what it is. It does not look as if it is a Apple authorized app or software. Please let me know if I should delete it. It says, "OSXFUSE allows you to extend OS X’s native file handling capabilities via third-party file systems." I do not understand that but it does not sound like something I want

Ciao.

Look for yourself:

I see no need for it and I would not have it on my MBP.

Ciao.

It was sometimes necessary in older mac OSX to have access to other file systems. there were (older) applications that needed this.

Nowadays you normally do not have need for it.

Modern (10.9 and 10.9) OSX do not like it very much. I would advise to uninstall it. If you still have an app that protests after de uninstall, you can use a modern version of that app or replace it with another app.

ciao to all.

If you connect your computer to hard drives formatted for Windows in the NTSF format and you want to be able to save or move files onto those drives, you need FUSE or something like it. Some time ago (I think Lex is right that it was with the introduction of 10.9) FUSE didn’t get updated and became unstable. It is now open source and I don’t know what its status is. If you absolutely need to write to NTFS drives, Paragon Software markets an up to date driver that is stable under 10.10 — don’t know about 10.11 which is due out today sometime.

Using a NTFS driver like dwb suggests is better. Macfuse should be avoided.

There are two NTFS drivers: Paragon which is not ready for ElCapitan and not for Yosemte, and Tuxeira which works in Yosemite (ElCapitan?).

Personnaly I would also avoid these NTFS drivers.

Paragon’s is 10.10 compatible, I have to use it at work sadly. I checked the website last week in anticipation of 10.11 and found they were promising 10.11 compatibility by today. I won’t know until tomorrow at the earliest but apparently that promise has been kept.

I test once in awhile. last time (10.10.3 or 10.10.4) it did not work well with me.

Is there a special reason for using Paragon instead of Tuxeira?

I recently read about both here: https://evil-operator.blogspot.be/2014/10/paragon-vs-tuxera-ntfs-for-osx.html

But I do not need any.

Lex

It’s what IT gave me and I’ve found no problems I can attribute to the driver. As for the Evil Operator blog site - they fail to mention the Tuxeira product is 50% more expensive than Paragon’s

of course all is pure honesty.

Personally I choose the best not caring about the price (not from most websites review). But the approach in this article seems rather correct.

Obviously you had not much choice (?) .

Thank you all for your answers. I was not sure what it was and wanted to know whether to uninstall it. There was a button to "Uninstall". Funny thing is that when I clicked on it it looked like it was uninstalling but then said OFXFUSE Does Not Appear to Be Installed" but the spinning wheel kept going for awhile. THE ICON IS STILL IN MY SYSTEM PREFERENCES. I cannot drag it to the trash any way I try. Please let me know if this is the best way to UNINSTALL it.

Ciao.

Thanks OGELTHORPE I was able to successfully remove the preference pane that stayed even after uninstalling. It is now gone !!!

FUSE for macOS allows you to extend macOS's native file handling capabilities via third-party file systems but is no longer being maintained.

I am using it myself to access my vm and mount the remote folders.

you can use a modern version of that app or replace it with another app.

What are the modern version? or other app.
