Hi,

I bought a 2016 Macbook pro 13 inch with the touch bar (cheapest TouchBar model with a 2.7 GHz i5, intel iris 550 graphics, 8gb of ram, 4 thunderbolt 3 ports and 250 gb of storage) last year and i was hoping that someone could tell me what kind of performance drop off i will get when i use my mac with the LG 5k monitor that apple are selling.

I do loads of photo editing in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop with my computer and I always shoot in raw and at the full 6k resolution that my Nikon D7200 shoots at (I edit the photo is 6k too). I also do a bit of video editing in Adobe Premier pro CC 2017. Most of the time the video is 1080p resolution but i like to shoot in 4k when I borrow my friends video camera occasionally.

When I'm working I generally keep about 8 - 12 tabs open in Vivaldi as well as a few pages documents.

I have th 13 inch model, top specs.

When using the LG external monitor with multiple apps I do not notice any performance slow downs.

However the screen becomes unresponsive and shows weird behavior when using photoshop brush tool.

It does freeze while using Garage Band as well.

I am returning the monitor and do not recommend it for professional use.

The issues you are experiencing are more likely due to lack of an additional discrete Graphics co-processor in the low-end 13-in Units. This is not the fault of the display, but of the computer.

I have the top tier 13-inch MacBook Pro.

It work fine with any other external screen, except the LG.

That LG display has about four times as many pixels on it as almost any other display you can attach. But it is not the number of pixels that is the bottleneck.

The things you describe as problematic are exactly the things that use the acceleration provided by a high-end Discrete graphics processor, which your 13-in MacBook Pro does not have. Filters and full-resolution editing at 4K and above (rather that proxy editing) are the things that really benefit from the Discrete graphics processor that is an option on the 15-in MacBook Pro.
