Is it legal to install MacOS on PC

I understand that this is unsupported, against the EULA, and frowned upon by the Apple Community. I currently own two iMacs, what law does this violate by downloading Mac OS on my mac and installing it to my PC? Thanks!

So in installing that where do I break the copyright?

In actuality you can do whatever you want with your PC and Apples software, only the people you tell will know that you are in breach of contract, but now that you have come to an Apple hosted forum to tell us about it, Apple know.

The EULA is a legal contract. By violating the EULA, you violate your contract with Apple, as the publisher of the software, as well as copyright law. It is NOT legal to install macOS on non-Apple hardware.

Title 17 of the United States Code in addition to similar laws in most other countries.

So Apple can write laws? I understand the copyright violation, but the EULA being a law doesn't make sense to me.

No, Apple can write the contract. That's what the EULA is. A contract. If you don't agree to it, don't use the software. Copyright law is a separate thing... that IS a law.

Violating the EULA is a civil matter. Violating copyright law is a criminal matter.

It's not criminal law. You won't get arrested. However, if Apple so chooses they can sue you since you agreed to the EULA.

Actually, it is. Or can be, depending on the circumstances.

Why don't you call Apple's legal department and ask them. I'm sure they would be happy to explain it to you in detail.

It's illegal. End of discussion. This is a technical support forum. It is not our job to educate you on the fine points of why you are a criminal.

Haha thanks

Well let me know the circumstances where it becomes criminal. I'm not aware of any.

You see, the software is not your property; it remains Apple's property while they have only allowed you to use the software. I think you'll find the best answers right here in the contract you signed when you installed the OS (and, by installing it, you did agree to and sign the contract):

If you make a copy of software you have a license for and give or sell it to a 3rd party, it becomes a criminal offense. Installing and using a copy you do NOT have a license for is also a criminal offense.

The finer points of legalities have been stated.

But know this — the instant that you install macOS on a PC, and it is on a network, and macOS is communicating with Apple's servers. Apple will know that your platform is a PC and not a Mac, and then you are at Apple's mercy. They may, or may not decide that since you have violated the specific terms of the macOS license agreement, to remotely revoke your rights to the operating system via a server to client software push.
