Getting iTunes balance back w/o original gift card

I was given an iTunes gift card about 5 years ago. I loaded it into my account, but I don't use my iTunes account for anything anymore and I want to get the balance back so I can give it to my husband to put on his account since his is the one we use for all our family's app purchases. I know it's not possible to transfer an iTunes balance from one account to another, but what I've read says they just put it back on the original card. I don't have that card anymore, however. Is there another way to have that money loaded onto a card if I don't have the original?
