Air Drop missing

I have two machines: 1 iMac and 1 MacBook Pro, both running MountainLion. While MacBook is showing the Air Drop icon in Finder the iMac doesn't and I can't figure out what the problem is.

Does anyone have a clue what could be wrong?

Thanks for your help

Hans

Here are the machines that support AirDrop.

Macs that support AirDrop in OS X Lion

If your Mac is the same as, or newer than, the models listed below, then it supports AirDrop.

  • MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*
  • MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)*
  • iMac (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)

*  The MacBook Pro (17-Inch Late 2008) and the white MacBook (Late 2008) do not support AirDrop.

You can easily turn on AirDrop on old mac using this instruction via terminal:

defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces 1

then hit enter...

Now you have tu restart your finder, and will see AirDrop icon in your finder window...

enjoy

Diego,

You are a genius. Air Drop is back!

Thanks a lot!

Good

You have to do this hack on all Macs if you want each computer see the other......

I did. But it seems that both machines need to be on the same network. If not, I can't see the other machine.

Great tip.

Yes! All machines must be in the same network...

Genius - this solved my problem and was also my first experience with terminal ! thankyou

good!

I wish I could say this worked for me (Terminal instruct) but it didn't. Even more perplexing is that my issue is with a late 2012 Mac mini that is up-to-date (10.9) and supposedly supports AirDrop. However, I cannot see it when activated while on other Macs (late 2011 MacBook Pro). I can see the MBP on the mini's AirDrop window, but not vice versa. That includes this hack on both computers.

The old trick of sending a file from MBP to mini to get it show on MBP no longer works either. As soon as the transfer is complete, the mini disappears from the MBP's AirDrop window.

I had the same issue. I just restarted the macbook that wasn't finding the other one and it worked.

Not too computer savvy. Where do I type in the text defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces 1? I am not sure what is terminal?

Thanks.

Nevermind, I think I figured it out after searching for "terminal."
