iPod 3 telling me to connect to itunes

I have an iPod3 that was given to me years ago by a friend who is now deceased.  I wanted to keep it like it was so I have not connected it to a computer.  Over the weekend, it has forced me to 'connect to iTunes".  The only option showing is to restore it and lose all of the music on it.  Help!  I want my music back
