Cannot create custom folder symbols

The regular folder symbol is not only boring, but they all look the same - which makes finding the right one a search task.

I have always used custom images to change that symbol.

Only in Yosemite this no longer works. Whenever I open an image in Photoshop and copy it - when I try to paste it to replace the boring folder logo, the "paste" command is grayed out.

Why doesn't this work any more? I follow the online instructions and still, it doesn't work.

I downsized the source picture - converted it to jpeg - nothing helps.

Why doesn't it work?

See if any of these work.

Folders – Color folders

Folders – Color folders Mavericks

Folders Factory – Color folders

Additional to Eric Root's suggestions, one can set icons on files and folders programmatically. Here is a post from yesterday where I furnished a Python program for that purpose.

I like to use photographs for folder symbols.

It used to be that you could just open an image in Photoshop, copy it.

Then select the folder of your choice, Command + I, select the folder symbol, and Command + V

These instructions can also still be found all over the web.

I just don't see why it doesn't work any more.

It's a trend. We get boatloads of unnecessary features that cramp our computers and phones, but necessary features are not to be had, e.g. All images I import from my computer to my iPhone can only be put in ONE folder (and it's a **** of a task to find an image among almost 500 in that folder)

The funny thing is: I can copy the photograph I use for older folders and copy them on new folders.

I just can't create new symbols. I shrank images down to small sizes to see if it was the file size that prevented copying, but it wasn't.

Once something is posted on the web, it stays as long as a site hosts it, or Google has indexed it. These posts are rarely updated by the original author, and their relevance to current solutions cannot be assured.

I always check the date of the original post, and if it is several years old, realize that what is past, may not be applicable to future solutions.

Ok open the image in Photoshop or Preview, click Select All, or command A then Copy or Command C then highlight the folder image in the Info window then click on Paste or Command V, you shouldn't need to resize the images before

copying and pasting.

This is how I tried to do it, but it doesn't work.

The "paste" command is grayed out.

Clicking Select all before Copying is crucial, are you doing that, this method works for me either wise I wouldn't have mentioned it. In fact just tried it without select all and it works, do your images have layers or alpha channels

if so make sure they are flattened first.

Yes, I use Command + A and then Command + C and Command + Shift + C as a variation.

It simply doesn't work. The "paste" command stays grayed out.

Ok so I have just booted into Yosemite. Opened Photoshop (in my case CS6) opened image. Then Command- A to select image, then Command- C to copy. Then in Finder select the folder who's image you want to change, Command- i for info panel, click to highlight the folder image top left of panel, then click on Edit and in the dropdown the Paste command should become available. See below.

Next question would be have you added any apps that alter the behaviour of Finder?

Does copying and pasting in other apps/ documents work?

I could do this with a .gif image

But it doesn't work with any kind of other file type like Jpeg or tiff.

I have no alterations to the finder, and copy/paste works in all other applications without problem.

Only when I try to create a custom folder image, the "paste" command is grayed out.

I have been doing custom folder icons since 7.6 (not os x -  I mean the pre-intel operating system) so I'm wondering why it suddenly no longer works.

Well as you you can see above it does work, i have Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra and the procedure works in all of them. So we need to find what is causing the problem.

In Photoshop when you click Select All and then Copy is the image you have selected and copied being shown in the Clipboard, to see go to Finder click Edit and then Show Clipboard.

The problem may be in your User account, have you tried to set up a new user account and see if you can perform the procedure there?

The issue maybe a corrupted preferences file, you could open up your Users/Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag com.apple.finder.plist to the trash but don't empty just yet, restart the mac and see if you can perform the procedure now. The plist is regenerated on restart if successful you can then empty the trash.

Have you tried starting up in Safe mode and seeing if you can change the folder icons. if you can change the folders icon in Safe mode then some third party app is interfering whilst in normal mode.

You could try downloading the last Combo update for Yosemite, Download OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 Combo Update

once downloaded double- click to install the Combo may help in resetting some system files that may have become corrupted over time.

Have you tried running Etrecheck, https://www.etrecheck.com/ you can post the results back here if you want.

The copied image doesn't get copied to the finder's clipboard.

I can copy and paste into other Photoshop files, but can't get the copied image out of Photoshop.

I actually found 2 plist:        com.apple.finder.plist.Fud8vep

                                             com.apple.finder.plist.pcvU1Ol

Could this be the problem? Should I delete both?

It is possible that these two files may be the problem, I would move them to the trash and empty it. Restart the mac

and try doing the procedure, if that hasn't improved things then move com.apple.finder.plist to the trash, don't empty,

restart and see if that has improved things. Once you restart you can empty the trash as a new plist is created, you may have to go to Finder Preferences and input your settings.

Tell me how you get on, as you can copy and paste in and to Photoshop then it sounds like an issue with Finder, but lets see.
