Dictionary widget no longer works

After upgrading to ”Sierra” the dictionary widget no longer works. This is extremely annoying, since I am a professional translator and use this widget all the time. Does anyone know if there is a fix to this?

Best regards

Ran into the same issue. It seems like Sierra doesn't have any dictionaries installed. Start the Dictionary app and download the dictionaries it provides. Once completed restart your machine or simply kill the Dashboard process. The dictionary widget will then be fully functional.

Thanks for your answer.

In my case, I obviously already had the dictionaries installed, since I could actually open them in the dictionary application (but not through the widget).

However, today the widget is fully functional again, and I can choose among the dictionaries like before, which makes my life easier.

Best regards

Many thanks. This worked for me.

Same here! If anyone have a solution? Or an alternative.

"lookup" issn't quite good to replace the dictionary widget. I wonder if we can set it to look up particularly on Dictionary.com, Wiki, Thesaurus?

Look at the Apple Recommended reply above. There's your answer.

This worked for me - thanks.

1. Open Dictionary app and change dictionaries.

2. Restart computer.

3. Go to: System preferences -> Mission control -> switch off Dashboard -> restart Dashboard

4. New/fresh Dictionary widget set up in Dashboard

It worked!

Thank you Par Svensson.  Your answer worked perfectly.

Thanks for this. The non-functioning dictionary widget was a real annoyance.

Thank you!  I use this widget all the time and it was driving me insane not to have it since the upgrade!  You don't know how much time you saved me.  Killing the dashboard and then toggling back to "as space" after opening the Dictionary app worked like a charm!

I only did step 3 and it started working again. Thanks for this!

Go to: System preferences -> Mission control -> switch off Dashboard -> switch on Dashboard

This worked perfectly! Thank you @aaroncasha!
